Justice Charles Canady was born in Lakeland, Florida and received his B.A. from Haverford College in 1976 and his J.D. from the Yale Law School in 1979.
Justice Canady practiced law with the firm of Holland and Knight in Lakeland from 1979 through 1982. He practiced with the firm of Lane, Trohn, Bertrand, & Vreeland, P.A., from 1983 through 1992.
From November 1984 to November 1990, Justice Canady served three terms in the Florida House of Representatives, and from January 1993 to January 2001, he served four terms in the United States House of Representatives. Throughout his service in Congress, Justice Canady was a member of the House Judiciary Committee. For three terms, from January 1995 to January 2001, Justice Canady was the Chairman of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution.
Upon leaving Congress, Justice Canady became General Counsel to Governor Jeb Bush. He was appointed by Governor Bush to the Second District Court of Appeal for a term beginning November 20, 2002. On August 28, 2008, Justice Canady was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court by Governor Charlie Crist and took office on September 8, 2008.
PRO BONO HELP NEEDED
The Board of County Commissioners for Polk County is seeking attorneys, retired judges, certified legal interns, or certified mediators to volunteer to conduct hearings for violations of the Polk County Animal Control and Animal Services Ordinance. Hearing Officers must be willing to work for a term of 1 year, for at least 4 days per appointment year.

After each LBA meeting at Eaglebrooke, a golf scramble will be scheduled at 1:30 sharp at the Eaglebrooke Golf Club for all interested persons. Four person teams are invited to participate or individual golfers will be connected to a team.

Congratulations to this year's Jerry DeVane Recipient, Kent Lilly
Kent Lilly was honored at Lakeland Bar Association’s Law Day luncheon with the Jerry A. DeVane Award.
This Award is presented annually in memory of Jerry A. DeVane, “a gentleman and scholar” in the legal profession who died of cancer in 1995.
Jerry was a passionate student and advocate of the law. His appellate work and trial advocacy were well known to all local lawyers who practice real estate and probate law.
Kent Lilly was born and raised in Lake Wales, Florida. He graduated from University of Florida with a degree in Accounting and then from law school at Florida State University. He then returned to Polk County where he has practiced law since 1977 in the area of Personal Injury/Wrongful Death law. Mr. Lilly is an AV Rated lawyer, the highest rating established by Martindale Hubbell, the agency which provides attorneys’ ratings throughout the United States. He is board certified by The Florida Bar as a Civil Trial Lawyer. This distinction is held by less than two percent (2%) of lawyers within the state of Florida. Mr. Lilly is also Board Certified in Civil Trial Advocacy by the National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA), a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, Florida SuperLawyers and President-elect of The American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), Tampa Bay Chapter.
Mr. Lilly has been very active in various Bar Associations, including the 10th Circuit Bar Association, Lakeland Bar Association, American Association for Justice, Florida Justice Association and American Bar Association. He has been especially involved in the Florida Bar Association, serving as a member of:
- The Board of Governors
- Florida Bench-Bar Commission
- Continuing Legal Education Committee (Advanced Trial Advocacy and Personal Injury Seminar Instructor)
- Executive Council of the Trial Lawyers Section
In addition, he has served as President of the following organizations:
- 10th Circuit Bench -Bar Committee
- 10th Circuit Judicial Nominating Commission (Co-Chair)
- Polk County Trial Lawyers Association (3 terms)
- Willson American Inn of Court
- Lake Wales Area Chamber of Commerce
- Lakeland Bar Association
Kent Lilly lives in Lakeland, Florida with his wife, Cindy, and their two boys, Justice and Lawton. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church and local civic organizations.
